INFORMATION FOR THE 2016 ELECTIONS

  • Proposed Constitutional Amendment

None of the races in our general election are contested.  In order to cut back on the expenditure of financial and human resources under future such circumstances, the Constitution Committee and Elections Committee proposed changing the Constitutional requirement for an election when none of the races are contested.  The proposal also eliminates the no vote.  As a result, CTU’s Executive Board recommends the following amendment to the Constitution of the Clerical-Technical Union of Michigan State University.  The following language changes will be voted on at the October 25th election.

ARTICLE IV – OFFICERS, NOMINATIONS, AND ELECTIONS

Current language

Single Nominee
Section 9. When there is only one nominee for an office, it is required that an alternate choice through the process of a no vote be afforded members voting. Should the no vote receive the highest number of votes cast, the elected Executive Board shall fill the position until a special election could be called. The previous nominee would not be eligible for appointment.

Proposed new language

Single Nominee for all positions
Section 9. When there is only one nominee for every position, no election will be necessary and the candidates will be affirmed by acclamation of a majority of the members at the first Membership Meeting following the scheduled election if there is a quorum. This procedure will be used only when the number of open positions equals the number of candidates running for those positions.  In the event that there is no quorum at the first Membership Meeting following the election, the outgoing Executive Board will convene at the Membership Meeting and, in the presence of the members, accept the candidates to constitute the new Executive Board and Audit Committee.

  • Straw poll

At the voting site, we will also hold a straw poll to allow members to weigh in on whether they prefer to hold the annual picnic at the CTU office or at Patriarche Park.
